Fill Type and Blend
Wool duvets are generally all filled with some grade of wool. To help you choose the best wool duvet, it is important to check that:
- The wool filling is 100% New Zealand wool. New Zealand wool is highly sought after and provides superior insulation in comparison to other wool varieties.
- The filling is 100% wool. Some wool duvets are blended with polyester fiber to produce a cheaper product. However this also compromises the insulating value and breathability of the wool.
Fill Weight
Wool duvets generate warmth through weight of fill so when you are choosing a wool duvet, know that the higher the fill weight, the warmer the duvet. Fill weight is generally expressed in grams per square meter (gsm).
As a general guide, wool duvets with a fill weight of:
- 400gsm and above are considered winter weight duvets.
- 300-400gsm are mid-weight duvets and can be used year-round. However these duvets will often require additional layers of warmth during colder weather.
- 300gsm and under are usually considered summer weight duvets.
Wool products require a casing with a minimum of 144 threads per square inch to prevent the wool fibres from penetrating the fabric. Fairydown uses natural cotton casings with 172 threads per square inch on all its wool filled duvets and underlays.
Construction
Wool duvets are manufactured by blending and combing the wool fibres into layers to form a thick padding. As the wool fibres are interlocked, they do not move as freely as feather and down. Therefore a simple construction method such as channel construction is generally all that is required to hold the filling in place and ensure an even distribution of warmth. Generally most wool duvets on the market are quilted in channels with either a straight or wave stitch design pattern.
Note
There may be a slight odour associated with this product as it is made from natural wool.
